Changing the World, One Elephant at a Time

End the poaching crisis. Save the elephants. These seem like such high, lofty, utopian goals. If we’re honest with ourselves, it may seem like we can never achieve such aims. At the same time, we know we must do something and, as an organization of ele-advocates we hold out hope that individual actions, taken together, really will change the world, save elephants, and build community along the way.

Committed to Saving Elephants and Building Community, Elephantopia transforms a “big-hairy-issue” into a personal story, sponsoring Kavalamanja in Zambia with the GRI Elephant Orphanage Project. It’s by saving individual elephants, along with efforts at passing positive legislation and increasing global awareness of the poaching crisis, that ALL ELEPHANTS CAN BE SAVED.

Take Kavalamanja and Elephantopia’s GIVE JOY CAMPAIGN for example. This baby elephant was orphaned a few years ago after her family was killed by poachers. She is yet another casualty of the ivory trade. By giving joy this holiday season you can make a HUGE difference with an INDIVIDUAL donation.

To care for a baby elephant has extraordinary costs. Monetarily, it costs approximately $1,000USD a month to feed a baby elephant (that’s about $12,000USD a year!) Physically, keepers must be dedicated enough to spend 24/7 with these orphans, even sleeping with them. Because in the wild, a baby elephant relies on it’s mother’s milk for the first 2-3 years, and then relies on the herd as a whole for community for the rest of their life.

We’d like to invite you to join with us in creating a community of people dedicated to being Kavala’s surrogate family. We are committed to raising the funds necessary to cover the monetary costs for Kavala so that GRI can continue to help other orphaned elephants and lead community awareness projects.

Our holiday GIVE JOY CAMPAIGN is an easy way to not only help us reach our quarterly goal of $3,000USD for Kavala, but also to help build a community of elephant advocates. You may  be surprised to know that 70% of people in China do not know where ivory comes from. People in your country may know where ivory comes from, but they probably don’t know about the tragic ivory trade and that every 15 minutes an elephant is killed by poachers for their ivory tusks! In fact, if you live in the United States, we are the second highest consumer of ivory in the world behind China.

Help spread awareness with these eco-elephant ornaments. Because of Journey to Africa, 100% of your donation for these ornaments goes directly to Kavala. And these ornaments come with a simple message about elephants and the ivory trade. And it gets even better, they can be planted in the new year and will bloom into Forget-Me-Not flowers, helping us always remember the plight of the elephants and how we are each called to make a difference.

So over the next few weeks, we will be sharing fun memes to help spread the word about our GIVE JOY CAMPAIGN. We hope you will join us and be sure to share them with your family and friends. Together, we can save elephants beginning with Kavala as we build a caring community of ele-advocates!
